About

The word for the in-between.

Umbral, from the Latin umbra. A threshold. The doorway you stand in when you're no longer who you were, and not yet who you're becoming. Every immigration journey is a long stay in that doorway. This tool is for the people standing in it.

A door open to warm golden light

Most software treats an immigration journey as a checklist of forms. But the people on the journey know it isn't a checklist — it's the sum of every dinner, every job, every small evening that proves a life was actually lived.

Umbral is the helpful place to keep that sum — a family workspace where moments and evidence sit beside each other, the way they really do in memory. A timeline a child can scroll through one day and see the shape of how they came to be from here.

It's also a workspace any attorney can step into. The same evidence, the same timeline — presented in a view built for the brief. The family keeps their story warm. The attorney gets what they need. Nobody has to translate.

We built Umbral for the families becoming American — and for every family becoming anywhere. The word threshold doesn't belong to one country.

What we believe

Four principles, kept simple.

Warm by default.

The interface should feel like a helpful family member, not a case file. Warm, careful, human.

Privacy is the default.

Your family's workspace is private to the people you invite. Sharing is opt-in, granular, and reversible.

Memory is evidence.

A photograph of a Tuesday dinner is just as real as a marriage certificate. The tool treats them equally.

Built for two readers.

The family is the first reader. The attorney is the second. Everything serves both.

Cross the threshold

Begin keeping your becoming.

The doorway doesn't close. But what you carry through it is yours to choose.
